Derbyshire 'Player Power' Caused John Morris Exit

Derbyshire captain Luke Sutton says player power led to the sacking of head of cricket John Morris.
Morris and his assistant Andy Brown were released from their contracts on Wednesday, halfway through the club's County Championship game with Essex.

Sutton told BBC Radio Derby: "The feedback from every single player was very, very negative.
"They felt negative about the style of management and the style that was being used in manoeuvring us as a squad."

It has emerged that a committee meeting was scheduled for Wednesday night in which Morris's contract, due to expire on 30 September, was up for renewal.

Prior to the meeting, Derbyshire chairman Chris Grant consulted players to gauge opinion on "how they thought John was in his role".

And according to Sutton, the resoundingly negative response from the players left Morris's position untenable.

"The chairman was in a very difficult position," said Sutton. "He'd made a decision that he wasn't going to extend John's contract because of the reaction of the players.

"That makes it very difficult for John to come into work the next day, both for him and for the players. I'm sure people can understand that.

Derbyshire have enjoyed a steady start to the season after finishing bottom of the County Championship last season.

They currently sit seventh in this year's competition, as well as being top of Group A in the CB40.

But Sutton, who only returned to Derby over the winter after leaving Lancashire, insists that problems with Morris behind the scenes have persisted for some time.

"This may be hard for some people to hear but those feelings were there for a while," he said. "Even with results going well the issue was escalating and it was a major problem.

"The easy decision would have been to extend John's contract and it would have been easy, to the outside world, to gloss over it.

"But he knew internally, that wasn't going to be a very popular decision at all. The players felt very negative with how the squad was being managed."

Sutton will now share the running of the county's first team affairs with academy director Karl Krikken, bowling coach Steffan Jones and committee member Tony Borrington.

Sutton re-signed for Derbyshire last September, having spent six year with them before moving to Lancashire in 2005.

"I'm new to the group and they were very resonant when I arrived," he explained. "It was clear to me when I arrived.

"I'm being brutally honest because I think it's fair to everyone so they understand where this decision has been made.

"But what I will say is that our spirit is outstanding. We had a meeting and called all the players together and, honestly, we're in great shape. We've got very good players in our dressing room."

Morris spent 11 years as a player with Derbyshire from 1982 to 1993.

He was in his fourth season in charge as coach, having been appointed as the club's head of cricket in August 2007.

"I can understand the shock from outside the cricket club," added Sutton. "But I think within the cricket club and certainly within the group of players we don't share that shock because we knew the order of events.
"When someone leaves you - in this case John Morris and Andy Brown, who have put an enormous amount of effort into the club - there's always shock and an element of sadness around it, but we're professional sportsman and we move on and our spirit is absolutely as strong as ever.
I have absolutely no doubt that we will continue to get better and better over the season
"The situation we're in is being dominated by the players. We carry a responsibility now to look after that and to prepare ourselves, control what we're doing this year and play some very good cricket.

"I want us to progress people as human beings, progress people as cricketers and create a very good environment in which people progress forward.

"I have absolutely no doubt that we will continue to get better and better over the season and the good results at the start of the year are not a surprise to me."

BCCI Denies Changing Jaipur Track To Suit Super Kings

MUMBAI: The Indian cricket board has rubbished media reports that the pitch at Jaipur's Sawai Mansingh stadium for Monday IPL game between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings was changed to suit the visitors.

IPL chairman
Chirayu Amin, also a board vice president, said the pitch was changed on the recommendations of its Ground and Pitches Committee.

"The
BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) wishes to clarify that the wicket used in the match between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, played at Jaipur on 9th May 2011, was as per the decision of the curator and the Ground and Pitches Committee. This decision was taken in the best interests of the game," said Amin.

A livid Rajasthan Royals captain
Shane Warne said on Monday he was shocked to be told which pitch to play on and how to prepare for their home game against Chennai Super Kings.

Warne was angry about the fact that the pitch didn't offer any home advantage to Rajasthan Royals and they lost the match by 63 runs.

"But it is a shame that we are the only home team to not get what we want," Warne said.

Amin added that neither of the playing teams have a say in selecting the wicket.

"It is the curator, in consultation with the Ground and Pitches Committee chairman, who prepares the wickets," he said.

Amin said the advice for all the host associations was that "the pitches should have good pace and consistent bounce".

"The committee members have visited a number of the IPL venues both before and, where necessary, during the season, and made appropriate recommendations, the priority being to ensure competitive and quality cricket," he said.
Venkat Sundaram, chairman of Ground and Pitches Committee, said the extreme heat and excessive wear and tear makes it impossible to play on the same track all through the tournament.

"Our primary objective is to provide good playing surfaces, which will be fair to both teams. The IPL is being played at the end of the Indian domestic season, and after the World Cup. Therefore, the main pitches are bound to have wear-and-tear. The extreme heat prevailing all over the country has also taken its toll. Hence, it becomes necessary to change the pitches in some cases, as good playing conditions will result in good cricket," said Sundaram.

Munaf Five For Keeps Punjab To 163

If Lasith Malinga doesn't get you Harbhajan Singh will. If both of them don't, then Munaf Patel will. Kings XI Punjab came out determined to counter Mumbai's two gun bowlers, and got off to a solid start, but Munaf reined them in with a five-for that stalled their late charge. The net result was that Punjab reached a score of 163, which they might have taken at the toss, given how badly out of form their batting has been in recent games.

The second over of the day set the tone for Punjab's defiance. The bowler of the tournament screamed in and delivered it full and wide of off stump. Gilchrist rolled back the years by moving across and slicing it through point.

The next ball was hit even more fiercely, but it found the fielder. Buoyed by the confidence of having middled two balls, Gilchrist took guard outside the crease for the next delivery. It was a yorker, followed by a bouncer that clattered Gilchrist on the back of his helmet. He was stunned for a moment and floored for a minute, but he got a new helmet and carried on. Punjab were not going to flinch today.

At the other end, Paul Valthaty carved Harbhajan Singh over the covers and lapped him past a diving Rohit Sharma at short fine-leg. He perished in Munaf's first over, pulling him straight to Aiden Blizzard at deep midwicket. Gilchrist, however, carried on in his determined ways. He was clearly not at his best, struggling to pick Harbhajan's straighter ones, and to adapt to the drop in pace once Malinga exited the attack.

Andrew Symonds let him off on one of those indiscretions, when Gilchrist drove Dhawal Kulkarni uppishly into the covers. Gilchrist celebrated by launching Rohit Sharma for a straight six, while Shaun Marsh checked in by creaming Kulkarni twice through the off side.

As he's done right through the tournament, Malinga returned and produced the breakthrough. He hurled down another pacy bouncer, and Gilchrist feathered the pull shot behind. Marsh had found his range by then, and seamlessly took charge of the innings along with Dinesh Karthik.

Blizzard made things easier for Punjab, spilling an easy at midwicket when Karthik top-edged Kieron Pollard. When Karthik swept and reverse-swept T Suman for successive fours in the 14th over, things were looking ominous for Mumbai. It was the cue for the Munaf show to begin.

Marsh welcomed Munaf to the crease by crashing a slower ball through the covers, before imparting a violent thump to another half-tracker, as the ball salied along towards the deep midwicket fence. Pollard had his own ideas, though, running at full tilt , diving to his right and intercepting the ball with both hands, to pull off one of the best catches of the tournament. That was the spark that ignited Mumbai, as they recovered to restrict Punjab to 39 off the last five overs.

David Hussey's horror run continued, as he meekly spooned his third ball to mid-off, giving Munaf his third wicket. Mandeep Singh and Karthik attacked Kulkarni for two sixes in the 17th over, but Malinga killed the momentum with a boundary-less 18th over, in which Mandeep ran himself out. Munaf then got Karthik to hole out, attempting an extravagant scoop over square leg.

In the same over, Ryan Harris spooned a slower ball in the air, and Pollard once again found a way to catch it. That was Munaf's fifth wicket, and he sported the biggest smile on the park. But Sachin Tendulkar would have been wondering if Mumbai's resurgence came a little too late.

We Need To Win For Warne

"We want to do it for Warne. This is the ideal opportunity to give him a perfect sent-off. He's been a great servant of cricket for 23 years and this is the time to show him what he means to us," an emotional Botha said.

On his team's chances of making the playoffs, Botha felt it won't be easy for the team.

"We need to win at least three out of the remaining four matches. RCB are playing amazing cricket. We have our plans. But in T20 cricket, you never know what will happen," the all-rounder said.

The last time these two teams met in Chennai, the Royals' were on the losing side. Botha felt this time it could be different.

"
Mike Hussey and Raina (Suresh) played great knocks in that match. We didn't bat well too. It's crucial to build partnerships. Now we've got specific plans for them. The gut feeling is that we can pull it off this time," he added.

Botha believes there could be a three-way tussle for a play-off spot. But for that, the Royals' would first need to get past Dhoni's men.

"We have specific plans for each of the opposition players. We keep updating them in case one doesn't work. That's been the secret of our success this season. We can be very unpredictable," Botha said.

Punjab Succumb To Merciless Gayle

Once every two years Bangalore hosts Aero India, the country's biggest air show, on the outskirts of the city. On Friday night, Chris Gayle took it upon himself to deliver a similar spectacle to the home crowd, which went ballistic while watching a flogging of a lifetime inflicted on Kings XI Punjab.

As the deflated attack desperately sought mercy, Gayle celebrated his domination with a triumphant smile, propelling his team to a thumping fourth straight win with an unforgettable century that made a backyard out of the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Adam Gilchrist, cheery as ever, decided to field on a pitch that promised assistance to his four-pronged pace attack. While he met Gayle's onslaught with a look of awe and admiration, his bowlers were what they looked - stunned into submission. The early movement and a spate of hits and misses in the first couple of overs were the few signs of encouragement in an otherwise dispiriting innings.

Gayle targeted the straight boundary, rarely attempted any cross-bat heaves or slogs, and relied on brute strength, partly a consequence of what is known to be a fitness regime that's ever the aspiration of the healthier than normal. Ryan Harris was the first recipient of Gayle's treatment, as he clobbered two consecutive sixes over long-off and long-on in the fourth over.

The Punjab bowlers erred in length, of often doling out length deliveries, but most would have been unsettled by Gayle's ruthless approach. His initial movement was to make room and, depending on the line, have a free swing in the same direction. Praveen Kumar's skills with variations in pace were conspicuous by their absence as he dished out a series of length deliveries that Gayle was only happy to dig into. After launching him for two straight sixes, he cashed in on some misdirection to pick up two fours in an over that yielded 22.

Gilchrist had to turn to spin and he found the expensive Piyush Chawla, whose figures this season took further beating with two monstrous sixes over midwicket off long hops. Virat Kohli, in a fortunate yet largely mature innings, was only too happy to cede floor to his partner. Gayle directed his attention to Love Ablish, whose pain of rejection was felt in three consecutive boundaries, one of which was a streaky edge past the diving Gilchrist.

A half-tracker from Abhishek Nayar disappeared over square leg, and the returning Ryan McLaren, who had delivered Punjab their first breakthrough with the wicket of Tillakaratne Dilshan, was to bear first sight of Gayle's celebration upon reaching his century. He was hammered over long-on, followed by a disdainful punch through mid-off that brought up the landmark off 46 balls, Gayle's second this season.

Relief came when Gayle holed out to deep midwicket off Chawla, and Kohli was bowled two balls later, but AB de Villiers kept the innings on track with a typically aggressive cameo to leave Punjab with a daunting task. Such was the manner in which Gayle imposed himself, anything else was destined to be a sideshow. Punjab's innings turned out to be worse - it was a virtual non-event.

The signs were there when Gilchrist was brilliantly run out first ball by Asad Pathan while attempting a quick single, and as is the case in games decided by individuals, it wasn't long before Gayle stepped in. He cast aside his usually calm, sober self and reveled at every Punjab misfortune wrought by his offspin. Paul Valthaty spooned one to square leg, Dinesh Karthik was trapped in front and Chawla yorked. As Punjab limped towards a fourth defeat in a row, Gayle stood out amid the celebrations, fluttering curls, locomotive moves and all.

Chennai Restricted To 114 Despite Badrinath Fifty

A strangling performance by Kolkata Knight Riders in the field kept Chennai Super Kings to under 120 on a difficult pitch at Eden Gardens. S Badrinath's carefully crafted half-century held the Chennai innings together.

The match was delayed by drizzle for 60 minutes but both captains thought the weather would have little impact on the pitch. They identified it as a strip that would be good for batting but were proved wrong when Chennai's openers arrived at the crease.

It was a slow, low wicket that didn't allow the ball to come on to the bat and Brett Lee and Iqbal Abdulla exploited that perfectly. Both bowled tight lines, with Lee using the slower ball well, and didn't give the batsmen room to break away. Pressure built and M Vijay succumbed. Abdulla saw him charging down the track, dropped one short and was offered an easy caught and bowled.

Lee bowled a three-over spell up front, instead of usual two, and while he pulled the noose at one end, another wicket fell at the other. Yusuf Pathan, who didn't allow any release, took the pace off the ball and had Suresh Raina caught at midwicket. Rahul Bhatia also permitted no let-up and after nine overs, Chennai had not scored a single boundary.

The first one came in the 10th over, off Pathan, when Badrinath had had enough. He smacked it low and flat over long-on. Michael Hussey had stayed with Badrinath through the tough patch but his labour ended in the next over when he was offered a short ball by L Balaji and smacked it straight to Eoin Morgan at midwicket.

Albie Morkel was promoted to number five and gave himself some time to get in and the Kolkata bowlers maintained the stranglehold. After eight balls, he had the opportunity to sink his teeth into Jaidev Unadkat, who was only brought on in the 15th over. The pace bowler seemed to misread the pitch and bowled too quick and was dispatched for back to back fours before he pulled it back with some slower balls. Morkel was dropped in the same over, by Lee, trying to launch Unadkat over the leg-side.

While Morkel was attempting to hit big shots and even appeared to get an edge in Lee's final over but was not given out, Badrinath was sculpting his half-century. He became more comfortable after he had got in and picked the balls to hit well. Morkel had more of the strike in the last two overs and all but one of his swings failed to get to the boundary.

Live IPL Match Streaming : Kolkata Knight Riders Vs Chennai Super Kings

Chennai beat Kolkata by two runs in the nail-biting first match of the Indian Premier League at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.

Kolkata needed four runs from the last ball off Chennai's Tim Southee. Rajat Bhatia was at receiving end, but a fine Yorker from the Kiwi prevented the batsman from going for big hit and Kolkata went down by two runs.

This was a far cry from an earlier situation when the Kolkata team was cruising on 93/1 with Jacques Kallis and Yusuf Pathan at the crease.

The Kolkata openers Jacques Kallis and Manvinder Bisla started the chase strongly scoring more than seven runs an over. They were cruising along till left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati scalped Bisla on 27 when the team total was 64. The run rate slowed down a bit but Yusuf Pathan ensured that the delay was short-lived and together with Kallis, he set out hammering the opposition bowlers.

CSA External Forensic Audit Into IPL Confirmed

Cricket South Africa (CSA) will launch an external independent probe into funds received from the Indian Premier League (IPL) after the series was played in South Africa following security concerns in India two years ago.

The
CSA decision came after reinstated CSA president Mtutuzeli Nyoka and chief executive Gerald Majola smoked the peace pipe on Wednesday.

The two had been at loggerheads over the alleged undeclared payments of huge bonuses after the IPL to Majola and other CSA management and staff.

At one stage, Nyoka publicly accused Majola of having lied to him about the IPL bonuses. Nyoka called for an external inquiry into the bonuses, but CSA held an internal one, which cleared Majola.

Nyoka was removed from his position in February after a majority vote of provincial cricket affiliate bosses but took the dismissal to court, challenging it as unfair.

CSA initially said it would appeal the court decision last month that Nyoka should be reinstated, but after an extraordinary meeting of the board of directors of CSA on Wednesday, the cricket board said Nyoka would take up his position again and the external inquiry he had requested would indeed take place.

The CSA about-turn came after threats of intervention by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc), which CSA last week said it would welcome, offering to open up its books to them.

"The (CSA) Board has agreed in the interests of cricket, to abide the judgment handed down in the South Gauteng High Court on 15 April, 2011. Accordingly Dr M Nyoka has been reinstated as president and chairman of the board of directors with immediate effect.

"The meeting unanimously agreed to abandon any appeal process in relation to the judgment," CSA said in a statement.

"It was resolved to institute an external investigation including a forensic audit in relation to the mandate given to the (earlier internal) Khan Review Committee (of investigating the bonuses)," the statement added.

"Accordingly for the sake of cricket unity and in the best interests of the game the Board is unanimous in moving forward in a united front."

Nyoka said although he and his childhood friend Majola had had their differences, they have made up and CSA was committed to undertaking a process of reconciliation and healing.

Sloppy Deccan Let Chennai Get To Formidable Total

On a surface as tired as the whole tournament, Deccan Chargers stifled Chennai Super Kings for the better part of their innings, but the mystery of how Chennai manage so many reprieves and educated edges in their games remained. Michael Hussey enjoyed the mandatory drop, Suresh Raina discovered two pleasantly surprising ones, and Albie Morkel laid into some ordinary death bowling to take Chennai to a total much better than Deccan's initial effort merited.

That is only one side of story, though. For Hussey invariably makes you pay for lapses in fielding. Ask Kamran Akmal and friends. Tonight's lapse summed up Cameron White's low confidence. Hussey was 10 when White should have swallowed a sitter at square leg. That would have given Pragyan Ojha a second wicket in his first over, and would have reduced Chennai to 19 for 2. It wasn't to be.

Hussey had already got off the mark with an edge between keeper and slip. Insult was duly added to both those injuries when he cut Ishant Sharma for four in the next over. The bowling, though, remained tight, slow and accurate. The score of 63 for 1 after 11 overs comprised merely five boundaries. In the 12th, Hussey reverse-swept Amit Mishra for back-to-back boundaries.

A Hussey chance soon went to hand as Harmeet Singh dismissed him with a long hop. However, Harmeet didn't keep his end of the bargain as he reacted late to a mis-hit from Raina, who would have been dismissed for 25 off 22 had Harmeet held on to the low chance at deep square leg.

Ojha again was the unfortunate bowler. Little did he know then that there would be more in the piece.

Before Ojha could create the next chance, though, Raina made Deccan pay with some vengeful slog-sweeping. Harmeet's predictable slower balls on leg stump, and Mishra's turn into his legs didn't help Deccan. The acceleration was acute: Raina scored the second 25 of his fifty in nine balls. Twenty-four off those came in three fours and two sixes.
Ojha created another chance, Ishant dropped duly at sweeper-cover.

Finally, it was a long hop that consumed Raina at deep midwicket. Ishant, however, went on to serve length balls at the death, and Morkel succeeded in losing the ball in the Chennai night on the third attempt. They were all back-to-back sixes over long-on: the first one landed in the stands, the second barely touched the roof, and the third went out of the stadium. That 21-run 19th over meant the total went from fighting to formidable, given the nature of the track and Chennai's spin-heavy attack.
