KARACHI: World’s fastest bowler Shoaib Akhtar will be honoured with a gold medal on Saturday by the organising committee of Pakistan Cricket Champions League (T20) here at the RLCA Korangi Stadium.
Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif, alongside his cliques, has decided to honour the star bowler, who recently retired from international cricket after the ICC World Cup. “Shoaib Akhtar has been a great son for Pakistan and its time to honour him for his extraordinary services for the country,” Rashid told ‘The News’.
Earlier, ‘The News’ reported that Shoaib Akhtar wanted to take the field one more time to say a proper goodbye to the game. He asked his teammates and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials for a farewell match. But both disagreed with the idea much to the disappointment of the maverick quickie.
In 2007, Inzamam-ul-Haq had announced his retirement after Pakistan were eliminated from the World Cup in the first round. But the PCB allowed Inzamam to play a Test against South Africa in Lahore as a farewell gesture and also rewarded him with a cash bonus.
“We should treat stars like stars because they are the ones who have made the country proud,” Latif added. Meanwhile, Rashid Latif will also receive a gold medal for his efforts in promoting the game all over the country. It was his and MNA Asif Hasnain’s plan to invite teams from all over the country to take part in this in this lucrative tournament, arguably the biggest town competition in history.
