For the first time in the tournament England needed to set a target after Strauss decided to bat first. Pietersen made his intent clear in the first over when he clipped Boyd Rankin through midwicket and at the start of Rankin's next over two further boundaries followed including a flowing straight drive. Strauss's first four was less convincing as he carved an edge down to third man and then he had a nervous moment as a top edge against Rankin looped over George Dockrell at fine leg for six.
